CONTRACTOR PENSIONS

The deregulation of the pension market in April 2006 has resulted in considerably more flexibility for contractors working through their own limited companies. The major difference is that there are no longer any limits to pension contributions made by one man limited contractor companies as long as the amounts are not much larger than the company's income for the year of the contribution.

So why should contractors set up a pension? Put simply, apart from the importance of providing a retirement fund for your future, it is one of the most tax efficient ways of saving money, since payments to a pension are made from gross income (before tax). Contractors who work through a limited company also have the option to make payments directly from their company bank account.

PENSIONS ADVICE

Why's this a significant tax advantage? Your limited company can contribute "pre-taxed" company income to a pension. If you are a higher rate tax payer, instead of declaring the income as company profit and taking the income as a dividend, you can put the same sum straight into a pension.
